6 things you should be doing to onboard for retention
So you know you know you’ve got a few new starters joining you in the new year, and you’re prepared for the rest of your January hiring stint…but how do you plan on onboarding them? Is your onboarding process focused on retaining employees and making sure they feel part of your team, even before they arrive on their first day? If you’re thinking, ‘Hmmm how do you do that?’ then do not worry – you’re in the right place.
If you would like to take your onboarding process to the next level, we have a few extra tips and recommendations!
Onboarding is now recognised as an important factor in retaining employees. 69% of employees are more likely to stay with a company for three years if they experienced great onboarding.
So what can you do to deliver a great onboarding experience?
Keep in contact:
Are you communicating at least once a week with your new employee in the lead up to their start date? The last thing they would want is to not hear from their future employer until they arrive at the office for their first day.
Share key decisions or company changes
Are you sharing key changes with your employee? For example, if you have recently introduced a new policy such as flexible working or have recently appointed a new manager, keep your new starter in the loop.
Integrating new starters
Invite to team meetings, office socials or key annual conferences
Have you invited them to informal, after work drinks with your team? Are they going to join you for your next team incentive or monthly meeting?
Take your new starter out for lunch
Pick a local restaurant near your office and take your new starter out for an informal lunch, perhaps invite them to drop into the office afterward to say a quick hello to everybody!
Helping your new employee feel welcome
Support employee through their notice period
Are you offering advice and support to your new employee through what is often a very difficult time?
Don’t underestimate the power of an unexpected gift
Having a goodie bag or welcome pack ready for your new starter is a really nice way of making them feel welcome on their first day.
Make sure everything is ready to go for your new starter
Have you made sure that your employee has the resources, equipment and support to hit the ground running when they start?
