Who are their competitors?
Look around at their market competitors and see what they are doing well, and what they could be doing better.
When building any company, it is important to keep an eye on the competition- even if it is to learn from them!

What funding stage are they at?
Identifying the funding stage a startup is in will help you decide if it is right for you.
But keep in mind that whilst the funding stage may be indicative of a wider dynamic, it is not necessarily the be-all-and-end-all of your startup journey.

- What size team will I work best in?
- What salary range am I looking for?
What can you bring to the company?
You may know all about the ins and outs of the company, but how will you help them to achieve their mission?
If you want to go the extra mile you can complete some spec work ahead of your interview. If you know what your role would involve, then make a plan of what you could bring to the table.
Even if it is something that never comes to fruition, showing that you have original ideas will make you stand out from the crowd.
Believe in their mission
If you don’t believe in their mission, why should they hire you?
The nature of a startup encourages an intense work ethic. You will likely be working with a small team, and a shared belief in the company values is crucial to startup success.
If they are building a product, tell them why you love it or why you would choose to use it.
If you don’t believe in their mission, then it isn’t the role for you.

- Why do you want to be a part of their journey?
- Why would use their product?
- Why would you recommend them to your family or friends?
Attend networking events
Because of a startup’s size, you may find that there isn’t an appointed Hiring Manager. A lot of the headhunting could be outsourced or done by the founder/CEO themselves.
This means networking is even more important.
If there are relevant industry events- whether in-person or virtual, go along. These events are perfect to meet people in a relaxed setting.
LinkedIn is another place where a lot of great networking can happen. If the company is on LinkedIn, look to see if you share any mutual connections or create new connections and share relevant content on your social media channels.

You can do all the prep work and have an amazing CV and cover letter ready to go, but you won’t land your dream job until you start applying. And don’t let a few no’s discourage you.
