Do You Have a Healthy Work/Life Balance?

National Work Life Week is Working Families’ annual campaign to get people talking about the importance of establishing a healthy work/life balance.  

For many, the pandemic meant that work life and home life seemingly merged overnight. Although there are many benefits to this way of life, it is important to set clear boundaries so that we can maintain a healthy relationship with our work.  

So, what actions can you take in order to maintain a healthy work/life balance? 

Stick to work hours 

One survey found that 56% people found it harder to switch off when working from home.  

It’s easy to get drawn into replying to work emails out of your working day, but not having time away from work can raise stress levels. 

You may think you are getting more done but working longer hours actually leads to a decrease in productivity levels and lowers the quality of work produced.  

It is more important than ever to create boundaries around your home and work hours. 

Take a break 

When you have a lot to do, taking a break might be the last thing on your mind. However, it is important for your mental and physical health that you don’t spend all day sat at a desk.  

Nearly half of people surveyed say they have developed musculoskeletal problems since working long hours from a sofa or a bedroom. Even if you feel like the work is piling up, get up and stretch your legs.  

Take time out of your day to focus on yourself whatever helps you disconnect and relax. 

After the introduction a 4 ½ day week to our business, our team found that by simply having Friday afternoon to themselves, productivity and happiness levels were boosted.  

Assess your priorities   

When you have a lot on your plate it can feel overwhelming. To deal with this, it can help to make a physical list and decide how urgent each task is, then you can complete them step by step.  

Sometimes by simply writing the tasks out you will see there is not as much to do as you feared. Don’t just do this for your work tasks, do this for all areas of life so you can prioritise keeping that work/life balance. 

Ask for help 

Don’t fall into the trap of staying silent.  

Sometimes it can feel like everyone else is managing perfectly and you are the only one who is struggling, this is rarely actually the case.  

By opening up to those around you, you could prompt the conversations surrounding mental health and work/life balance to start. 

Asking for help can be the hardest, but most important step to getting the help and support you need.  

In a post-covid world, it is more important than ever to maintain a healthy work/life balance.
