What is employee sponsorship? How much does it cost? What are the benefits? How long does it take? After discussions with a number of our clients, we realised these are questions that many of them were asking. Having successfully helped several clients in the organisation of sponsorship of non-EU candidates, we wanted to answer some of these questions on a wider scale!

So let’s start with the basics…

What is Employee Sponsorship?

Employee sponsorship is when a UK employer sponsors the visa of a non-EU candidate, giving them the right to work for their organisation in the UK.

Many people may know this more familiarly as a legal ‘work permit’, and it is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that their new employee has the correct documentation and that it is correct and genuine.

What are the benefits?

Bigger talent pool of skilled workers

Small businesses generally look for talent in their local area which can subject many companies to talent shortages. However, sponsoring an employee to move to your city and work for your company means that you will then have access to talent from all over the globe!

Bringing in the skills

Overseas workers could bring you the exact skills you’ve been looking for for your projects and perhaps even hold the potential to move into positions which you’ve been looking to recruit for such as Managers or Test Leads.

Long-term talent retention

Most candidates are hoping to come to the UK in search of a better quality of life to that offered in their home country, they are highly motivated to work and build a career here, so there is a positive incentive for retention with the ability to sponsor employees on a permanent basis.

Companies pride themselves on the diversity of their teams and sponsorship is a great way to introduce fresh ideas and skills into your team and business

How does it work?

To sponsor an overseas employee you will need a sponsorship license. The license you require will be dependent on the type of candidate you are looking to employ:

  • Tier 2 License – skilled long-term workers (mainly for general roles for which the UK are experiencing skills shortage. E.g. Engineers. Tier 2 licenses can also be used for the transfer of employees from overseas branches to UK branches)
  • Tier 5 License – skilled temporary/contract workers (mainly for creative and sporting temporary workers such as dancers or performers, or also the temporary hire of charity, religious or government workers)

The application process is as follows:

  • Check eligibility
  • Choose license type
  • Allocate internally someone to manage the sponsorship using the online portal SMS (Sponsorship Management System)
  • Apply online and pay fees (outlined in FREE DOWNLOAD below)
  • Provide up to 3 supporting documents. There is a possibility a representative from the UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) may visit your business
  • Review and Approval

Refunds are available for employers and the criteria for this is explained in the FREE DOWLOAD below.

How much does it cost?

The fees for employment sponsorship are all listed in the FREE DOWNLOAD we have provided at the bottom of this blog. However, as a brief overview the fees for sponsoring and employee can be broken down into:

  • License Fee
  • Visa Application Fee
  • Immigration Skilled Charge
  • Immigration Health Surcharge
  • Certificate of Sponsorship Fee

The cost of the above will be dependent on the type of license you choose (Tier 2 or Tier 5) and the length of time you are planning to sponsor an employee (contract, long-term or permanent). All of this is explained simply and clearly in the short, FREE document we have created on Employment Sponsorship. Scroll to the bottom of this blog to DOWNLOAD this fact-sheet for FREE.
