Does a reduced working week really work?

The story that hit the paper, in our own words…

People value their time, they always have, but now, they expect their employers to value their time too. According to a study by the Independent, flexi-time is the number 1 perk for employees of all ages.

At our summer conference we asked each other just that, what do we value most and what can we do to improve the working environment for all? The answer was unanimous, we all valued our time and wanted more of it to spend doing the things we love, whether that’s spending time with family, going for walks, spending time in the gym or being together in the pub.

As a recruitment company, we often talk to people who want to change companies due to frustrations with limitations of work-life balance. Don’t just take my word for it, many studies have been conducted to back this up. Here are some stats to back it up:

  • 82% of employees said they’d be more loyal and less likely to leave if they had flexible jobs
  • 92% of employees said they would be more likely to stay with their job if their bosses showed more empathy
  • 76% of employees who don’t feel valued at work are seeking other job options.

And more importantly…

  • 89% of bosses wrongly believe that their employees quit because they want more money.

But not here, not at ISL. Here, each one of us is listened too and our ideas are encouraged. Many are actioned … a couple aren’t (we’re still working on nap pods and an office dog!) But all suggestions are welcomed.

And so, came a change…

Previously we had incentives for a Friday, where if certain weekly targets were hit, we could leave from 4pm.

From that point on, we were given a clear, short term goal: hit 150% of weekly target and everyone leaves work on Friday at 12pm to do whatever was most important to us.

The very next week we hit that target and continued to do so for the next 5 weeks running.

But it wasn’t just an increased target we hit, we also saw a 38% increase in interviews plus 41% more revenue on a weekly basis!

Our director, Alan Furley, had this to say: “It was a bit of a shock how successful the incentive was, I think it’s worked so well because it’s a clear short-term goal, which we can collaborate on achieving and was agreed across the office.”

We aren’t the only ones who have tried a reduced working week, take a look at Microsoft for example. They introduced a 4 day work week and have seen productivity boosted by 40%.

We do understand that one size doesn’t always fit all but sometimes trying something new could really surprise you.
